Paintless dent removal is a method of repairing dents, dings, and creases in a vehicle's metal panels without the need for body filler, sanding, or repainting. A technician gains access to the back of the damaged panel and uses precision metal rods to gradually massage the metal back into its original position.

The technique relies on a fundamental property of automotive steel: it has memory. Push it back into shape carefully, and it returns to exactly where it was. The result is a repair that's invisible to the eye, preserves your factory paint, and protects your car's resale value.

Between 80 and 90 per cent of everyday dents are suitable for PDR, provided the paint remains intact.

How Paintless Dent Removal Works: Step by Step

Step 1: Assessing the Damage

The technician begins with a PDR light board, a flat panel that casts a grid of lines across your paint. Dents distort those lines, revealing the exact size, depth, and edges of every imperfection. Even dents you hadn't noticed.

Step 2: Gaining Access Behind the Panel

On door dents, this means removing the interior door card. On bonnets, the panel is often placed on a dedicated dent table. On pillars or areas with limited access, the glue pull method is used instead.

Step 3: The Push Technique

Using metal rods and body picks, the technician applies precise pressure to the back of the dent, starting at the outer edges and working inward. Each push is assessed under the light board until the panel reads perfectly flat.

Step 4: The Glue Pull Technique (GPR)

When rear access isn't possible, plastic tabs are bonded to the outside of the dent and pulled outward using a slide hammer or bridge puller. The tabs release cleanly with heat or isopropyl alcohol, leaving no residue.

Step 5: Finishing and Fine-Tuning

High spots and ridges are tapped down with non-marring hammers until the panel is indistinguishable from factory. The light board is the judge.
