Is PDR Cheaper Than Your Insurance Excess?

Should You Claim Insurance for a Car Dent, or Just Pay for PDR?

A shopping trolley clips your door in a Castle Hill car park. Your first instinct is to ring your insurer — after all, that's what you pay premiums for. But a dent claim is one of the few claims that can leave you worse off than the damage itself. Here's how to run the numbers before you pick up the phone.

The Three Costs of Making a Claim

Most drivers only think about the excess. There are actually three costs to weigh up.

Your excess. The out-of-pocket amount on every claim — typically $500 to $1,000 on Australian comprehensive policies, and often higher for drivers under 25 or performance vehicles.

Your no-claim bonus. Many insurers step your rating back after an at-fault or unrecoverable claim (a car park dent with no third party to chase is usually unrecoverable). Losing a maximum no-claim discount can add 10 to 20 per cent to your premium.

Premium loading at renewal. Even where your rating survives, a recent claim on your history can push your renewal up. Spread over the three to five years insurers look back, a single small claim commonly costs several hundred dollars beyond the excess.

The Break-Even Test

Add your excess to a conservative estimate of premium impact — say $200 over three years. If that total is more than the repair quote, claiming loses. Worked example:

A medium door dent quoted at $350. Excess $700. Premium impact ~$250 over three years. Claiming costs roughly $950 to fix a $350 problem. Paying for PDR yourself saves about $600 and keeps your claims history clean.

Most single-dent PDR repairs land well under a standard excess, which is why the answer for everyday dents is almost always: don't claim. For what your specific dent is likely to cost and how to get a fixed price, see our guide to getting an accurate dent repair quote in Sydney.

When Claiming Is the Right Call

Insurance earns its keep in three scenarios. Hail damage across multiple panels, where repairs run into the thousands — see our Sydney Hail Season 2026 guide for hail-specific claims advice. Damage where paint is broken and conventional repair is unavoidable. And any repair where the quote clearly exceeds your excess plus the likely premium impact.

One more tip: many insurers don't penalise hail claims the way they do at-fault claims, because storm damage is a "no-fault" event. Check your PDS — it changes the maths in hail's favour.

A Quick Decision Checklist

Before claiming for a dent, answer four questions. Is the paint intact? Is it one panel or several? Is the repair quote below your excess? Would a claim affect your no-claim bonus? If the paint's intact, it's one panel, and the quote is under your excess — pay for PDR yourself and keep insurance for the big stuff.

One More Number to Check: Your Excess

Before accepting any quote, compare it against your insurance excess. Most single-dent PDR repairs in Sydney cost less than a standard $500 to $1,000 excess — and claiming can also cost you your no-claim bonus.
